What Are Plastic Cups Used For?

What Are Plastic Cups Used For?

As I have already mentioned, there are two different types of plastic cups for take-out drinks. It is a reusable plastic cup or a disposable plastic cup. These two different types of plastic cups are usually used in different settings.

Disposable plastic cups

Disposable plastic cups are usually used for public events, where people can sit with friends. This kind of disposable plastic cup is of course mainly used for takeaway drinks in café, juice bars or milkshakes in local ice bars. Plastic cups are transparent so that the drinks inside can be easily displayed, and they are really durable, so they can be used for alcoholic and non-alcoholic beverages.

Sometimes, disposable plastic cups also compete with reusable plastic cups, that is, which cup the event organizer should use to hold the drink. Especially in festivals and two-day events, attendees may not be good at reusing plastic cups. Therefore, it is more beneficial to use disposable plastic cups.

Disposable PET Plastic Cup

Reusable plastic cups

There are two types of this reusable plastic cup. One of them is used in soft drinks and alcoholic beverages because they are somewhat transparent. The other is used for hot drinks such as coffee and tea, because some drinks have protective covers that can prevent customers' hands from being burned.

Transparent reusable plastic cups are mostly used in closed communities. This can be an amusement park where the different stores must use the same reusable plastic cups. It will be easy to collect, clean and reuse.

This reusable plastic coffee cup is also mainly used in closed communities, but more often in markets and professional indoor activities. They are actually used by many consumers to bring their morning coffee to the office.

How do plastic cups degrade?

How and whether the plastic cup can be like the other things depends on what material the plastic cup is made of. The difference is between PLA and PET plastic, because rPET and PET are made of the same material, but it is just recycled. Below we will divide it into these two categories.

PET and rPET

Unfortunately, PET and rPET cannot be degraded in nature, nor can they be degraded in commercial degradation machines. Why is collecting and throwing away plastics so important, if possible, they should be collected and sent for recycling. Most of the discarded plastics are sent to energy companies, where they can be burned as biofuels.

PLA is essentially non-degradable just like PET and rPET. It is a bit far-fetched to say that PLA plastic cups are biodegradable. But PLA plastics are degradable in special industrial facilities, and PLA plastics can only be degraded in these facilities, because they need to be mixed with some chemicals at a certain temperature for at least 60 days before they start to degrade. Therefore, it is very important that PLA plastic cups are collected and sent to the correct facility so that they can be degraded.
